What is Anime? It is hand-drawn and computer animation originating from or associated with Japan. The word anime is the Japanese term for animation, which means all forms of animated media. Anime on Netflix: what’s there to see?

Anime has graduated from a once niche market into a major media player. Ever since Netflix saw the endless possibilities in the anime industry they have been adding old as well as new shows on their site.

If you want to try out something new this year then maybe starting some good Japanese animation could be the thing for you. Anime has the ability to hook you in once you start watching it, only if you know what to watch though.

Here are the list of some of the really good anime Netflix has to offer.

Death Note

What is anime?

Starting off the list with a real classic. Death Note was originally a manga that was adapted into an anime. This psychological and thriller story follows a dark hero and dual protagonist storyline with few action scenes. The story gives importance to intellectual battles rather than hand-to-hand combat where the wits and ideologies of Light Yagami and L (our two protagonists) clash. With 37 episodes, the story is filled with nail-biting scenes and plot twists that will make you question your very way of perceiving things.

Devilman Crybaby

Devilman crybaby anime on netflix

Now coming to a rather recent anime adaptation of a really old manga. Devilman Crybaby follows the story of Akira Fudo and his friend Ryo Asuka as they face demons. In Devilman Crybaby, Akira is informed by Ryo that an ancient race of demons has returned to take back the world from humans. Believing the only way to defeat the demons is to incorporate their powers, Ryo suggests to Akira that he should unite with a demon. Succeeding in doing so, Akira transforms into the titular Devilman. He possesses the powers of a demon but retains the soul of a human as he confronts the demons. The story brings out the values of “being a human” and leaves the viewers to debate the differences between a demon and a human.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE)

NGE anime on netflix

Said to be a true masterpiece, Evangelion is set fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm, particularly in the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3. The protagonist is Shinji, a teenage boy who was recruited by his father to the shadowy organization Nerv to pilot a giant bio-machine mecha called an “Evangelion” into combat with alien beings called “Angels.” The series explores the experiences and emotions of Evangelion pilots and members of Nerv as they try to prevent any and all of the Angels from causing another cataclysm, and as they deal with the quest of finding out the real truth behind events and organizational moves. Netflix recently tweeted that they got the exclusive rights to stream NGE which was a very big and significant announcement for the fans in the west.

RE: Zero-Starting life in another world

Unlike the other anime mentioned before, RE: Zero is adapted from a light novel. The story follows Subaru, a shut-in teenager, who gets transported into another world one day while returning from a convenience store. While doing so he gets a very special ability to turn back time with his memories intact. However, he can trigger his ability only when he dies. We get to see the struggles of Subaru as he tries to fit in the new world, dying countless times in the process. If you enjoy your fantasy stories with a gentle touch of macabre, then you will truly enjoy this series.

Haikyuu!!

Anime series on netflix

Coming to an entirely different genre, here we have Haikyuu, a sports anime. Haikyuu is a volleyball anime following Hinata Shoyo, a highschool freshman whose dream is to reach a national level and be known as “The Little Giant.” Despite being short, Hinata loves playing volleyball, a sport predominated by tall people, however, he has an incredible jumping ability allowing him to play on equal footing with the other tall players. The story portrays the fact that no one is born talented and in the end, hard work is what really matters.

Durarara

Best anime series on netflix

Mikado Ryūgamine, a young boy who longs for the exciting life of the big city, moves to Ikebukuro to attend Raira Academy with his childhood friend Masaomi Kida, whom he has not seen since he was young. After the two meets at the train station, they set out to explore the streets of Ikebukuro. However, little does he know that he was not ready for the mysterious life of Ikebukuro. A city in Japan where urban legends come true. The story is told from the perspective of approximately eleven of the main characters and changes every episode in the anime, sometimes even more often. One of the few constants given in every episode is that the narrator gives their own opinion on the current situation that they are in as well as what things that make them tick and keep them going in Ikebukuro: a city with a large underbelly that is the medium for the majority of both the plot’s development and random violence throughout the series.
